Back-to-School Block Party Brings Joy to Families in Paterson, NJ
As summer comes to a close, the start of a new school year can bring both excitement and financial pressure for many families.
For single mothers and families experiencing housing instability, preparing children for school often means balancing the cost of backpacks, school supplies, clothing, and other everyday essentials.
On August 16, GFoundation joined the annual Paterson Community Block Party to help make the back-to-school season a little brighter for local families.
A Community Celebration for Local Families
Hosted by Paterson Task Force and Pilgrim Mission Church, the annual Community Block Party takes place outside Hilltop Haven Family Shelter in Paterson, New Jersey.
Hilltop Haven has long served as a place of safety and support for women and families experiencing difficult circumstances. Through GFoundation’s ongoing partnership with the shelter, we continue working alongside local organizations to support single mother families in the community.
Each year, the event transforms a neighborhood street into a welcoming space where families can enjoy food, music, activities, and opportunities to connect before the school year begins.
Small Gifts That Bring Big Smiles
As part of this year’s celebration, GFoundation distributed custom necklaces for children in a variety of styles and sizes, giving them an opportunity to choose something that reflected their own personality.
We also provided practical everyday items, including toothbrushes and hair care products, that families could use at home.
While these gifts were simple, they reflected an important message: every child deserves to begin the school year feeling valued, confident, and cared for.
One of the most heartwarming moments of the day was seeing several children choose to share their gifts with siblings and friends, reminding us that generosity often begins with the youngest members of our communities.
Preparing for a New School Year Together
The Community Block Party brought together multiple organizations committed to supporting local families.
Children received backpacks and school supplies, families enjoyed a community barbecue and live music, and visitors connected with organizations providing local resources and services.
Throughout the afternoon, our team had the opportunity to talk with children about the upcoming school year. Many excitedly shared what grade they were entering, the friends they hoped to see again, and the subjects they were looking forward to learning.
These conversations were simple but meaningful reminders that every child carries hopes, dreams, and unlimited potential.
