Reflections on Safe Shelter, Collaboration, and Supporting Women and Families Experiencing Housing Instability
GFoundation recently attended the 2026 National Women’s Shelter Network (NWSN) Conference held in Tucson, Arizona, from September 21–24.
Bringing together more than 500 shelter professionals, nonprofit leaders, service providers, and community partners from across the country, the conference created an opportunity to learn from organizations working to support women, children, youth, and families experiencing housing instability.
Under the theme Together We Are Stronger: Safe Shelter Saves Lives, participants explored how shelters can provide more than immediate safety—creating environments where individuals can rebuild stability, dignity, and hope through long-term support and community connection.
Learning from a National Network of Shelter Professionals
Throughout the conference, workshops, panels, and discussions focused on important topics including trauma-informed care, women’s health, sustainable fundraising, social enterprise, advocacy, and community partnerships.
A central message emerged throughout the conference: meaningful support requires more than addressing immediate needs. It requires listening, building trust, and creating pathways that help individuals move toward long-term stability.
For GFoundation, these conversations provided valuable insight into how we can continue strengthening our Women’s Shelter & Transitional Housing Support Program and better support our shelter partners across New York and New Jersey.
Creating Safe and Supportive Environments
One of the key themes of the conference was the importance of person-centered and trauma-informed care.
Speakers emphasized that shelters should provide more than physical protection. They should create environments where residents feel respected, supported, and empowered as they navigate difficult transitions.
A trauma-informed approach recognizes that individuals experiencing homelessness may have faced significant challenges before entering shelter care. By prioritizing trust, choice, and dignity, shelters can help create spaces where individuals feel safe and supported while working toward stability.
This perspective reinforced the importance of GFoundation’s approach: providing practical resources while recognizing the individuals and families behind each need.
Recognizing Lived Experience as Strength
Another important takeaway was the value of including people with lived experience in shaping programs and services.
Former shelter residents bring firsthand understanding of the challenges faced by individuals experiencing homelessness. Their experiences can help organizations create more responsive programs while providing opportunities for leadership and professional growth.
During the conference, Lotus House, a women’s shelter based in Miami, shared its approach to creating pathways for former residents to develop skills and pursue employment opportunities within the organization.
This model demonstrated how lived experience can become a valuable source of knowledge, helping transform support systems through shared understanding and empowerment.
Building Sustainable Support Through Partnerships
The conference also highlighted the importance of sustainable resources and strong partnerships in supporting shelter operations.
Organizations discussed the need to build diverse support systems through:
- Individual donors
- Corporate partnerships
- Community engagement
- Volunteer initiatives
- Collaborative fundraising efforts
A key message was that sustainable support is built through relationships—not transactions.
By developing meaningful connections with supporters and community partners, organizations can strengthen their ability to respond to changing needs and provide consistent services.
This aligns closely with GFoundation’s commitment to connecting shelters, donors, and community partners to create practical and lasting support.
Strengthening GFoundation’s Shelter Partnerships
The NWSN Conference provided valuable perspectives for the continued growth of GFoundation’s Women’s Shelter & Transitional Housing Support Program.
Through this initiative, GFoundation works with shelter partners to provide essential hygiene products, personal care supplies, and other resources for women and families experiencing housing instability.
Moving forward, we hope to continue:
- Building long-term relationships with shelter partners
- Listening closely to community needs
- Expanding opportunities for corporate and community engagement
- Connecting resources where they are needed most
The conference reinforced an important lesson: meaningful support begins with listening, grows through collaboration, and becomes sustainable through long-term relationships.
As GFoundation continues expanding its shelter partnerships across New York and New Jersey, we remain committed to providing practical care that supports dignity, stability, and opportunity for women and families.
Together, we can build a stronger network of support—because lasting change requires a collective effort.
