For many children, a library is a familiar part of school life. It is a place to find a book, study after class, or discover a new interest.

At Rehoboth School in Yirgachefe, Ethiopia, the Dreaming Library is helping create more of these opportunities for students from kindergarten through grade 8.

Located about 407 kilometers from Addis Ababa, Rehoboth School serves children with different interests, goals, and hopes for the future. The Dreaming Library gives them a dedicated space where they can read, study, and explore ideas beyond the classroom.

A Space Where Children Can Read and Explore

GFoundation supported the establishment of the Dreaming Library to create a welcoming learning space for students at Rehoboth School.

Natural light fills the room through its windows. Inside, children can sit down with a book, practice reading, study, and spend time learning together.

The library has already become part of school life. Students gather to read in groups and share stories. Some practice their reading skills together, while others choose to spend additional time in the library after class.

For students who previously had limited access to a dedicated reading space, the library offers a new environment for learning and discovery.

Why Access to Books Matters

A library is more than a room filled with books. It can give children the opportunity to explore subjects beyond their regular lessons, strengthen reading habits, and discover new interests.

At Rehoboth School, teachers hope to continue developing the Dreaming Library with more storybooks, science materials, and reference books.

The library currently has books, tables, and chairs, but additional resources could help it better serve the hundreds of students who use the school. More books would give students a wider range of subjects and stories to explore, while improved learning furniture could make longer reading and study sessions more comfortable.

Learning to Care for a Shared Community Space

The Dreaming Library also gives students an opportunity to learn responsibility.

Teachers encourage children to handle books carefully, share resources with one another, and help keep the library clean. Through these everyday habits, students are learning that the library is not simply a room they visit. It is a shared space that they can care for together.

This sense of ownership is an important part of the library’s purpose. Students are not only gaining access to learning resources. They are also learning how to protect and share those resources with others.

A Library Where Dreams Can Begin

For a child, one book can introduce a new idea. A quiet place to read can create time to think, imagine, and ask questions.

At Rehoboth School, the Dreaming Library is becoming a place where children can picture new possibilities for their futures. A student may begin to imagine becoming a doctor, a teacher, a writer, or pursuing a path they have not yet discovered.

The Dreaming Library is still growing. With more books, learning materials, and improved study spaces, it can continue developing as a center for reading, learning, and creativity for students in Yirgachefe.
