Finding Her Own Path

What did you want to be when you grew up?

For many of us, the answer changed over time. As we learn new things and discover more about ourselves, our dreams often evolve too.

That has certainly been true for Jeongyeon.

Today, we’re sharing the story of Jeongyeon, a college student who received support through GFoundation’s Korea Child Sponsorship Program.

Today, she is a college student working toward her dream of becoming a flight attendant. But before arriving at that goal, she spent years exploring different possibilities and learning more about who she wanted to become.

Discovering What Fits

Jeongyeon’s career goals have changed over the years.

At one point, she wanted to become a police officer. Later, she considered nursing.

Today, she hopes to work as a flight attendant.

“I think I’m better suited for a job where I can stay active and meet different people,” she shared.

As she explored different possibilities, she gradually discovered what excited her most and began preparing seriously for a career in aviation.

Beginning in her second year of high school, she attended flight attendant training classes for over a year, learning interview skills, communication techniques, posture, and presentation skills.

Looking back, she believes the experience helped her better understand both the industry and herself.

Stepping Into Adulthood

These days, Jeongyeon is adjusting to college life, living in a dormitory, and building friendships with her classmates.

Like many young adults, she is excited about what comes next.

She talks about places she hopes to visit and experiences she wants to have.

At the same time, she is becoming increasingly aware of the responsibilities that come with adulthood.

After graduating from high school, she worked part-time at a restaurant, helping with customer service, food preparation, cleaning, and other daily tasks.

“It was harder than I expected,” she said with a smile. “It made me realize how important it is to prepare for future expenses.”

Creating Room to Dream

Jeongyeon shared that sponsorship helped cover educational expenses, including English classes and flight attendant training courses.

Because of that support, she was able to focus more on preparing for her future and less on worrying about whether those opportunities were within reach.

When asked what life might have looked like without sponsorship, she paused for a moment before answering:

“Honestly, I probably would have had to take on more part-time jobs.”

It was a simple answer, but it revealed something important.

Sponsorship didn’t just help cover expenses.

It gave Jeongyeon something every young person needs: the opportunity to focus on her future.

A Connection She Still Remembers

Although she has never met her sponsor in person, Jeongyeon still remembers the letters she received.

“The letters felt warm and personal—almost like hearing from a friend,” she shared.

Knowing that someone believed in her future and cared about her journey gave her encouragement during important moments in her life.

Looking Ahead

When we asked what she hopes for in the future, Jeongyeon didn’t hesitate.

Someday, she hopes to help others the way she has been helped.

The child who once received support is now becoming a young woman who hopes to give back.

And perhaps that is one of the most meaningful outcomes of sponsorship.

Not simply helping a child today—but helping them build the confidence, skills, and opportunities they need for tomorrow.

Because of supporters like you, young people like Jeongyeon can continue exploring their potential and taking meaningful steps toward the future they imagine for themselves.
