I. What Is Children’s Day in Korea?
Children’s Day, celebrated every year on May 5, is a national holiday in South Korea dedicated entirely to children.
On this day, families often spend time together, go on outings, and give children special gifts—much like celebrating a birthday. It’s a joyful occasion that highlights the importance of children’s happiness and well-being.
II. How Families Celebrate
For many children in Korea, Children’s Day means:
- family trips or picnics
- favorite meals or treats
- small but meaningful gifts
- quality time with parents or caregivers
The day is filled with excitement and anticipation for children across the country.
III. A Brief Look at the History
Children’s Day in Korea began in the 1920s, inspired by children’s rights advocate Bang Jeong-hwan, who believed children should be respected as individuals.
Originally observed on May 1, the holiday was later moved to May 5 to give children a dedicated day of celebration. Today, it remains one of the most beloved holidays for families in Korea.
IV. Not Every Child Celebrates the Same Way
While many children enjoy the festivities, some children experience Children’s Day differently.
Children living in residential childcare facilities may not receive personal gifts or individual celebrations due to limited resources and the absence of a dedicated caregiver. For them, the holiday can pass quietly.
This difference reminds us that not all children have the same opportunities to celebrate—even on a day meant for everyone.
V. How Gfoundation Celebrated Children’s Day
This year, Gfoundation delivered Children’s Day gifts to childcare facilities across Korea through a special giving campaign.
Our goal was simple:
to help children in care feel remembered, celebrated, and valued—just like any other child on this special day
VI. Staying Connected
Children’s Day is a reminder of why care, attention, and consistency matter in a child’s life.
