Starting over in a new country is never easy.
For refugee families who have resettled in the United States, building a new life involves more than finding a place to live. Turning an empty apartment into a home often requires basic household essentials that can be difficult to afford during the early stages of resettlement.
Through a partnership with the Korean Church of Syracuse, GFoundation recently provided essential household supplies to refugee families rebuilding their lives in Syracuse, New York.
Meeting Everyday Needs During Refugee Resettlement
Families arriving in the United States through the refugee resettlement process often face the challenge of rebuilding their daily lives in an unfamiliar environment. Even after securing housing, the cost of basic household goods can add financial pressure during an already demanding transition.
Items such as laundry detergent, dish soap, cleaning products, storage bags, and personal care supplies are part of everyday life. Having access to these essentials can help families focus their limited resources on other priorities, including rent, food, transportation, and long-term stability.
A Community Partnership in Syracuse
At GFoundation, we believe meaningful support grows through collaboration.
For this distribution, GFoundation provided donated household goods and personal care items, while volunteers and staff from the Korean Church of Syracuse coordinated the local preparation and distribution process.
The church team sorted and organized the donated items by category before preparing packages for refugee families with whom they had established connections in the Syracuse community.
This local partnership helped ensure that practical support reached families through trusted community relationships.
Providing Support with Dignity and Care
Every family experiences resettlement differently, and meaningful support requires respect for individual circumstances.
During this outreach, we learned of a recently arrived refugee family that had very few belongings and was also grieving the loss of a loved one. Understandably, the family preferred not to meet directly during this difficult time.
Respecting their privacy, we coordinated with a trusted member of the local refugee community to ensure that the remaining daily necessities were safely delivered to the family.
Support does not always require a public moment. Sometimes, care means listening, respecting personal boundaries, and finding a thoughtful way to help.
What Was Provided to Refugee Families
The distribution included a range of practical household and personal care items, including:
- Laundry detergent
- Dish soap
- All-purpose cleaner
- Zipper storage bags in various sizes
- Vitamins
- Personal care products
- Small gifts, including custom necklaces
These items may be part of an ordinary household routine, but for families establishing a new home, access to everyday essentials can provide immediate practical relief.
