In Madagascar, where hospitals lack basic medical resources, even the most routine procedures can become life-threatening. Patients travel for miles, often arriving too late for preventable conditions.
Among the many stories from our recent medical mission, one young mother’s fight for survival stood out.
At just 17 years old, she arrived at the hospital weak and in critical condition. Her blood pressure had dropped to a dangerously low level. The medical team acted quickly, using a portable ultrasound machine to assess her condition. It confirmed their fears—she was suffering from a life-threatening pregnancy complication. An emergency C-section was the only way to save her and her twins.
But the challenges were immense. The hospital lacked reliable electricity, making even basic surgical procedures risky. Blood for transfusions was not readily available—in Madagascar, family members must donate blood for their loved ones, and there was no emergency supply on hand. The facility had no neonatal intensive care equipment, meaning that if complications arose for the newborns, the doctors would have little to work with.
Despite these obstacles, the medical team pressed on. The twins were delivered successfully, but they were small and fragile, requiring immediate attention. The team did everything possible to stabilize them. Meanwhile, their mother was losing blood rapidly, her life hanging in the balance as the hospital scrambled to find donors.
She survived—but the severe drop in blood pressure left her with partial vision loss. Still, she is alive today, able to hold her babies—something that would not have been possible without the quick diagnosis from the portable ultrasound machine and the dedication of an extraordinary medical team.
Stories like this are why we must return. This fall, we are planning another medical mission to Madagascar—to provide life-saving care, essential medical supplies, and critical maternal health support. But we cannot do it alone.
