Unhygienic School Toilets

African girls face significant challenges due to unhygienic or non-existent restrooms. During their menstrual periods, they are often forced to go to the bushes, and some girls resort to using leaves or old rags as makeshift sanitary pads, further exposing them to serious health risks.

In Ethiopia, diarrhea causes 14% of child deaths, claiming over 25,000 lives annually

Unclean and unhygienic restrooms lead not only to health problems but they also hinder girls from attending school during their menstrual periods.

Monthly Absences lead to Dropping Out of School

Liya (alias), a student in Ethiopia, often misses school during her menstrual period due to the high cost of sanitary pad and lack of proper facilities to change them. This disrupts her education and makes her consider dropping out.

Lack of Facilities After Gym Class

Meles (alias), who loves gym class, often has to leave school early because there are no proper facilities to clean up after gym class. Without a proper restroom, he has to use other secluded spots to clean himself.

How We Solve the Problem

Building Restrooms to Connect Water in Communities and Schools

Connecting water systems in communities and schools. Renovating school restrooms to provide safe, clean, and private facilities, fostering a supportive environment for girls.

Sanitary Pad Distribution

Providing sanitary products to African girls in need, ensuring they can attend school comfortably and confidently.

Hygiene Education / Club Activities / Leadership Skills

Collaborating with local communities and schools to educate women and girls on how to manage their menstrual health. Additionally, we encourage children to create after-school clubs, encouraging them to develop leadership skills.

Our Reach to Ethiopia

As of 2024

<Oromia State, Ethiopia>

Our Goal for Ethiopia

We’ve already built clean washrooms in 10 schools across Ethiopia—including in regions like Sebata and Boru—and we’re not stopping. We will continue reaching more schools and aim to build 50 additional washrooms.
