More Than a Photograph: Sharing Food and Family Memories in Madagascar
In Madagascar, Fihavanana reflects the importance of harmony, solidarity, and connection among family and community.
For families living in communities without easy access to photography services, even something as familiar as a family portrait can be difficult to obtain.
Through the Frame Our Moment campaign, photographer Shin Misik has been visiting local communities in Madagascar to photograph families and provide them with framed portraits of their own.
During these visits, bread was also distributed to children in local communities, bringing together two simple forms of support: sharing food for an immediate need and preserving a family memory that can last for years.

Hunger Remains a Serious Challenge in Madagascar
For many families in Madagascar, access to adequate food remains a significant challenge.
According to the 2023 Global Hunger Index, Madagascar received a hunger score of 41.0, placing its level of hunger in the “alarming” category.
Children are particularly affected by the consequences of inadequate nutrition, making continued attention to food insecurity and child nutrition important for communities across the country.
During visits to local communities, photographer Shin Misik distributed bread to children as part of the effort to provide practical support.
A loaf of bread cannot address the broader causes of hunger. But for a child receiving it that day, it can still be a meaningful act of care.
Preserving a Family Moment Through Photography
Meeting immediate needs is important, but families are more than the challenges they face.
Through the Frame Our Moment campaign, Shin Misik has also been traveling to communities where photography services are not readily available and taking portraits of local families.
The photographs are printed, framed, and delivered to the families to keep.
For families who have had few opportunities to have a portrait taken together, the finished photograph provides a tangible record of their family at that moment in time.
It also reflects the spirit of Fihavanana—the relationships and connections that hold families and communities together.
One Photograph Becomes a Memory to Keep
A family photograph may seem ordinary to those who can easily take and print one.
But access to professional family photography is not equally available everywhere.
By bringing photography directly to local communities, the Frame Our Moment campaign gives participating families an opportunity to gather in front of the camera and receive a framed portrait of their own.
The focus is not on the hardships surrounding each family.
It is on the family itself—the people, relationships, and moments they want to remember.
Meeting Immediate Needs While Celebrating Family
Bread distribution and family photography serve very different purposes.
One responds to an immediate need. The other preserves a moment of family connection.
Together, these efforts reflect a broader approach to serving communities with both practical care and respect for the dignity of the people at the center of our work.
