Refugee Youth Summer Camp Helps Young People Build Confidence and Community in Louisville
Summer camp can be more than a place to play—it can be a place where young people build friendships, confidence, and a sense of belonging.
This July, GFoundation partnered with Choedae Community Church to support the third annual Louisville Refugee Youth Summer Camp, a four-day program serving more than 100 students from refugee families who have resettled in the United States.
Bringing together young people from across African countries and other refugee communities, the camp created opportunities for connection, learning, and personal growth in a welcoming environment.
A Safe Place to Learn, Play, and Grow
For many refugee youth, adjusting to life in a new country comes with challenges beyond learning a new language or adapting to a different school system.
Building friendships, developing confidence, and finding a sense of belonging are all important parts of the resettlement journey.
The Louisville Refugee Youth Summer Camp was created to support those needs by offering soccer clinics, team activities, worship services, and games that encouraged young people to connect with one another while enjoying the summer together.
Throughout the four-day camp, participants developed new friendships, strengthened teamwork, and experienced the encouragement of a caring community.
Supporting Girls Through Menstrual Health Education
As part of GFoundation’s support, campers received custom camp T-shirts, and girls were provided with menstrual hygiene products to help meet an important everyday need.
The camp also included age-appropriate education on basic menstrual and reproductive health, helping adolescent girls better understand their changing bodies and the importance of menstrual health.
Providing accurate information alongside essential menstrual products helps girls participate more confidently in school, sports, and everyday activities.
