Our second Mother’s Day with Single Mothers

For many single mothers and refugee moms, Mother’s Day can feel like just another tough day. No flowers. No family brunches. No words of appreciation.

But this year(which is our second year celebrating Mother’s Day), thanks to the kindness of our supporters and partners, over 60 mothers across New Jersey and Syracuse felt remembered, cherished, and honored.

Special Gift Sets Filled with Love

With the support of generous donors, we prepared Mother’s Day gift sets including essential items like makeup foundation, shampoo, treatment, vitamins, and personal care products — along with a handwritten “Happy Mother’s Day” card — bringing smiles and surprise to moms who needed it most.

Moments of Care Across Communities

NJ Clifton & Paterson Shelters

In collaboration with Hilltop Haven, we visited Hope through Care/Grandma’s place in Clifton (newly supported this year) and Paterson, (now in our second year of support) to share gifts with 20 households led by single mothers or guardians.

In addition to personal gifts, we provided essential household supplies — paper towels, bath tissue, laundry detergent — items that were urgently needed by these families.

NJ Hackensack Mother’s Day Celebration with Neighbor Plus

At Pilgrim Mission Church, together with Neighbor Plus, we joined 20 single-mother families in a special worship, prayer, and luncheon.

For the second year, we stood beside these resilient mothers, offering not just gifts but also listening ears, encouragement, and moments of peace amidst their daily struggles.

Honoring All Mothers

Mother’s Day is a time to pause and honor the often invisible sacrifices mothers make.

Research consistently shows that single mothers experience significantly higher levels of depression, anxiety, and stress compared to married mothers.
Studies reveal that the annual rate of depression among single mothers is nearly double that of married mothers, and their risk of experiencing major depressive episodes is three times higher than that of the general population, with a 12-month prevalence rate of 7%.
Additionally, symptoms of depression and anxiety are reported to be twice as common in single mothers as in partnered mothers, highlighting the urgent need for mental health support and warm appreciation within this population.

Thanks to our supporters, this year we were able to remind single moms — who rarely receive such appreciation — that their love, strength, and resilience deserve to be celebrated.
