Bringing Christmas Joy to Refugee Families in Syracuse, New York

The holiday season is often a time for family gatherings, warm meals, and giving.

For many refugee families who have recently resettled in the United States, however, Christmas can also be a reminder of the challenges that come with rebuilding life in a new country. Limited financial resources, unfamiliar surroundings, and the absence of extended family can make the holidays especially difficult.

This past Christmas, GFoundation partnered with the Korean Church of Syracuse to help make the season a little brighter for 20 refugee families in Syracuse, New York.

Why Holiday Support Matters for Refugee Families

The first months after resettlement often involve adjusting to a new language, finding housing and employment, enrolling children in school, and building a new support network.

During this transition, holiday celebrations may not be financially possible for many families.

Simple gifts, warm meals, and opportunities to gather with others can provide encouragement, reduce feelings of isolation, and help families feel welcomed in their new community.

A Community Partnership That Made Christmas Possible

Working alongside the Korean Church of Syracuse, GFoundation prepared Christmas gift packages for refugee families participating in the church’s community support programs.

The packages included practical and thoughtful items such as:

  • Clothing and socks
  • Cosmetics and personal care items
  • Toys for children
  • Christmas cards
  • Small gifts families could share with siblings at home

Because transportation can be challenging for newly resettled families, church volunteers also provided rides so everyone could safely participate in the celebration.

More Than Gifts—A Place to Belong

The celebration began with a Christmas worship service followed by the distribution of gifts.

Children eagerly opened their presents and shared their excitement with one another, while mothers received practical items chosen to support their everyday lives.

Afterward, everyone gathered for a warm meal prepared by church volunteers.

Moments like these help create more than happy memories—they build relationships, strengthen community connections, and remind families that they are welcomed and supported as they establish new lives in the United States.
