A safe learning environment begins with access to clean water, safe sanitation, and proper hygiene facilities.
For many students in Ethiopia, attending school can mean studying without reliable access to clean toilets, handwashing facilities, or safe water. These challenges affect not only students’ health but also their ability to learn in a safe and supportive environment.
Through its School WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) Project, GFoundation is working with local partners to improve health and hygiene conditions in public schools across Ethiopia’s Oromia Region.
Expanding Access to Safe Water and Sanitation
Since 2022, GFoundation has partnered with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) to improve health and hygiene conditions in public schools in Sebeta and Gelan Guda, located in Sheger City, Oromia Region.
The project includes constructing and renovating school washrooms, improving hygiene facilities, and connecting schools to more reliable water supplies.
The current phase of the project began in May 2024 and will continue through December 2025, supporting students in ten public schools.
Why School WASH Matters
Access to clean water and safe sanitation is essential for creating healthy learning environments.
When schools have reliable toilets, handwashing facilities, and access to water, students are better able to maintain personal hygiene throughout the school day.
Improved WASH facilities also contribute to healthier school environments where students and teachers can learn and work more safely.
Monitoring Progress Together
As part of the ongoing project, GFoundation visited Ethiopia to monitor implementation and review progress with local partners.
During the visit, our team met with the KOICA Ethiopia Office, the GFoundation Ethiopia branch, and the Korea International Volunteer Organization (KVO) to exchange knowledge and discuss approaches to strengthening school WASH programs.
Regular monitoring and collaboration help ensure that projects continue responding to the needs of schools and local communities.
