The renovation of our school’s restrooms, made possible by GFoundation, has brought about more than just hygienic improvements. It has significantly transformed the safety and well-being of our female students. Before the renovation, the school’s restroom was located far from the classroom and even in the forest, so the girls were often exposed to the risk of sexual harassment on their way to use the facilities. This dangerous environment forced many girls to avoid the restroom altogether, especially during their menstrual periods, leading to frequent absences.
One student shared her experience:
“It was terrifying to use the restroom before, especially because of the fear of being harassed. Some of my friends faced real danger when going to the toilets. But now, with the new restroom close to our classrooms, I no longer have to worry about that. I feel safe.”
GFoundation has not only built clean and accessible toilets but also ensured that essential facilities, such as water supply and spare spaces, are readily available. With the new toilet located conveniently near the classrooms, students can use the restroom during class breaks without leaving the school grounds or skipping classes altogether. This has significantly reduced absences, especially during menstruation.
Medina Ahmed, the school’s biology teacher and women’s club coordinator, said:
“Before GFoundation’s support, the girls hardly used the old restrooms because they were too far and unsafe. Now, with the new facilities within the school, female students can use the restroom without fear, which allows them to focus on their studies.”
The most significant impact has been the reduction in the risk of sexual violence. Previously, the girls were vulnerable to harassment as they made their way to the remote forest restrooms. Now, with the restrooms situated within the school, this threat has been virtually eliminated, and the girls can use the facilities without anxiety.
Another student shared her experience:
“We used to be scared to go to the restroom because of the risk of sexual violence, but now we don’t have to worry about that at all. It’s such a relief.”
Overall, GFoundation’s restroom renovation project has provided a cleaner and more hygienic environment and a much safer one for female students. This ultimately has led to a significant decrease in the rate of absence, allowing the students to focus more on their education.
