International Menstrual Hygiene Day

Menstrual Hygiene Day is an annual awareness day observed on May 28 to commemorate the menstruation cycle of women.

It was initiated by a German-based NGO WASH United in 2014 and continues to this day.

The purpose of the day is to eradicate the negative image of menstruation and raise awareness of the importance of education and a sanitary environment for menstruation.

Half of the world’s population experience menstruation, but there are still places around the world that are still reluctant to speak about it.

Even if discrimination is prohibited by law, some people in Nepal still consider menstruating women as unclean.

A vicious practice called ‘Chhaupadi’ isolates women during their periods in a dark unsanitary place.

Women are left open to danger, let alone have any menstrual products.

Women in Malawi temporarily use Kitenge fabric as sanitary pads and only have the option to lie down during their periods.

Girls miss school and everything they used to do outside.

GFoundation has been conducting menstrual product support programs for women all over the world to have safe periods.

In 2018, we delivered 6 months’ worth of sanitary pads to 350 girls in Bethany school, Madagascar.

The following year, we provided 1 years’ worth of sanitary pads and undergarments for girls in Bethel school and Trinity school in Madagascar.

In 2020, we distributed sanitary pads to 120 girls in Cameroon and the year after we supported sanitary pads in Cambodia.

GFoundation is continuously supporting girls.

However, there are still many girls who need your help.

1 in 10 female students in African countries have difficulty in buying sanitary pads and attending class.

There girls can’t keep up with their studies and eventually have a high percentage of dropping out of school (UNICEF, 2019).

All girls should have safe periods and we need your help to protect them.

Continue to support the girls and keep them in school.
