Women and Girls

COVID-19 didn’t just bring a pandemic – it brought a shadow pandemic of violence against women. Shockingly, a survey across 13 countries found that 1 in 2 women reported experiencing or knowing someone who has experienced violence during the pandemic.

It’s a fundamental human right for women to be treated with the same rights, dignity and opportunities as men. We live in a society where governments, international agencies and people work for women’s equality, but why does gender-based violence, unequal pay, limited opportunities still exist? At least 200 million girls and women have been subjected to female genital mutilation (UN Women), women earn only 84 cents for every dollar earned by men (World Economic Forum), and menstruation is still considered a taboo in parts of Africa and Asia. It will take time for full women’s equality, but we need to be committed and make initiatives to accelerate progress and advancement.
