From Day One to Today: Standing with Venezuela
On June 24, 2026, two powerful earthquakes measuring magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 struck northern Venezuela within moments of each other, causing widespread destruction and disrupting daily life for families across affected communities. Buildings collapsed, essential infrastructure was damaged, and thousands of residents faced uncertainty as rescue and emergency relief efforts began.
In response to the disaster, GFoundation mobilized support for earthquake-affected families, focusing on essential supplies, personal hygiene, and access to safe drinking water. As communities continue facing the challenges of displacement and recovery, GFoundation is working to help families meet immediate needs while supporting their path toward stability.
The Impact of the 2026 Venezuela Earthquakes
The earthquakes struck west of Caracas, affecting communities across northern Venezuela, including areas of Caracas and La Guaira. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the magnitude 7.5 earthquake followed a magnitude 7.2 event by approximately 30 seconds. The disaster caused extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure, creating urgent humanitarian needs.
Beyond the immediate destruction, damaged infrastructure and disrupted access to essential services have made recovery more challenging for affected families. For those living in temporary shelters, access to food, clean water, sanitation, and personal-care products remains an important part of daily life.
Meeting Urgent Needs Through Emergency Relief
Following the earthquakes, GFoundation’s emergency relief efforts included emergency survival supplies, menstrual hygiene products, and resources to improve drinking water access and living conditions, focusing on the immediate needs of affected families.
1. Emergency Survival Kits and Essential Supplies
Families displaced by earthquakes often need immediate access to food, drinking water, and basic household essentials.
GFoundation’s relief activities included preparing and distributing emergency supply kits containing:
- Hygiene Supply : toilet paper, shampoo, towels, and sanitary pads
- Food Parcel : cornmeal, rice, and pasta
- Hot Meal : a hot roasted chicken meal and a drink
These supplies were intended for families staying in temporary shelters and tent communities in Caracas and La Guaira. By focusing on practical necessities, the relief effort aimed to help families manage daily needs while navigating the disruption caused by the earthquakes.
2. Menstrual Hygiene Support for Women and Girls
Displacement can make it especially difficult for women and girls to access menstrual products and maintain personal hygiene. Limited privacy, shared sanitation facilities, and disruptions to essential supplies can create additional challenges during menstruation.
Recognizing these needs, GFoundation’s emergency response included sanitary pads and essential hygiene products for women and girls affected by the disaster. Providing menstrual products as part of humanitarian relief recognizes that menstrual health remains an essential need, even during emergencies. GFoundation seeks to ensure that women and girls are not overlooked when emergency supplies are distributed.
3. Supporting Access to Safe Water and Comfort in Temporary Shelters
Access to safe drinking water is particularly important after a major earthquake, especially when infrastructure has been damaged. Venezuela’s rainy season also presents challenges for families living in temporary shelters, where heat, humidity, and limited ventilation can make daily conditions uncomfortable.
To address these needs, GFoundation’s relief activities included providing electric fans and water filtration systems. These resources were intended to help families manage difficult shelter conditions and improve their access to drinking water. Together with emergency food and hygiene supplies, this assistance reflects an effort to respond to several interconnected needs rather than focusing on a single type of relief.
Working with Local Communities Beyond Immediate Relief
Emergency assistance is an important first step, but recovering from a major earthquake takes time. Families affected by the disaster may continue facing challenges related to housing, access to essential services, and the disruption of everyday routines. GFoundation’s response emphasizes cooperation with local community leaders and organizations to understand changing needs and coordinate assistance. Working with local partners can help humanitarian organizations identify practical priorities and adapt support as conditions change. Rather than treating emergency relief as a single distribution event, GFoundation aims to remain attentive to the needs of families as they move from immediate survival toward longer-term recovery.
The Road Ahead: Supporting Earthquake Recovery in Venezuela
Although the earthquakes occurred in a matter of seconds, the challenges of recovery extend far beyond the initial disaster. Families who have lost access to stable housing, essential supplies, and community infrastructure may need continued assistance as they rebuild their daily lives. GFoundation recognizes that humanitarian support must respond to both immediate needs and the changing circumstances of affected communities. Through emergency relief and cooperation with local partners, GFoundation seeks to continue supporting families in Venezuela with dignity and care.
