Two Powerful Earthquakes Changed a National Holiday Into a Humanitarian Crisis

June 24, 2026, was meant to be a day of celebration across Venezuela.

Instead, two powerful earthquakes struck within 40 seconds of each other. A magnitude 7.2 earthquake was followed by a magnitude 7.5 earthquake near San Felipe in Yaracuy State.

The earthquakes caused widespread damage across northern Venezuela, including Caracas and La Guaira. Homes, apartment buildings, hospitals, roads, and public infrastructure were affected, leaving thousands of families in urgent need of assistance.

According to official reports as of June 29, more than 1,450 people have died, over 3,200 have been injured, and 50,000 to 60,000 people remain displaced or unreachable. Economic losses are estimated at approximately US$670 million, while rescue operations continue across the affected areas.

Where Has the Damage Been Most Severe?

La Guaira, one of the hardest-hit areas, experienced widespread building collapses and major damage to critical infrastructure. Rescue teams continue searching through damaged neighborhoods.

In Caracas, structural damage has been reported in residential buildings, schools, hospitals, and public facilities. Several communities have experienced significant casualties, while transportation and essential services have been disrupted.

Power outages, damaged roads, and interruptions to water and communication systems have made it difficult for many families to access basic necessities or receive assistance.

Why Is Humanitarian Assistance So Urgent?

The earthquakes struck in areas where emergency response capacity was already limited.

Damage to transportation networks and public infrastructure has made it difficult for relief supplies to reach affected communities quickly. Ongoing disruptions to electricity, communications, and public services continue to slow recovery efforts.

As many families remain displaced, immediate humanitarian assistance is needed to help meet basic needs while recovery efforts continue.

How Is GFoundation Responding?

GFoundation is working alongside Fundación Genesis and trusted local partners to support families affected by the earthquakes in Caracas and La Guaira.

As many families have been displaced or can no longer safely remain in their homes, local church facilities are being opened as temporary shelters for people seeking a safe place to stay.

Together with our local partners, emergency assistance includes:

  • Opening temporary shelter spaces for displaced families
  • Providing mattresses and bedding for people staying in shelters
  • Preparing and distributing hot meals to affected communities
  • Assessing additional emergency needs as recovery efforts continue

By working through trusted local partners already serving these communities, assistance can reach families as needs continue to evolve.

Why Local Partnerships Matter

Delivering humanitarian assistance after a major disaster requires trusted local relationships.

GFoundation has experience responding to emergencies alongside local partners, including previous earthquake responses in Türkiye (2023), Morocco (2024), and Myanmar (2025).

By working with organizations already serving affected communities, we can better understand changing needs and help deliver assistance where access remains possible.
