As a proud partner of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), GFoundation attended the ECOSOC Special Meeting on International Cooperation in Tax Matters on March 18th, held at the UN Headquarters in the ECOSOC chamber.

This annual event, established in 2013, plays a critical role in fostering inclusive and evidence-based discussions on global tax issues. It unites Member States, UN experts, and various stakeholders to explore fiscal policies that support sustainable economies and fair international tax systems.

This year, the meeting was especially crucial, focusing on enhancing global tax cooperation and examining the role of net wealth taxes in achieving equality and financing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Representatives from a diverse group of countries including Uganda, the United Kingdom, Argentina, Sierra Leone, and the Philippines etc., expressed how a United Nations framework convention on international tax cooperation could synergize with existing initiatives aimed to complement the international financial architecture.

The discussions at the meeting made it clear that there’s a strong need for countries to work together on tax issues in a way that fits into the bigger picture of fixing the world’s financial system. The idea is that by creating a global agreement on how to handle taxes, we can help ensure that all countries, especially those that are still developing, have smooth and sustainable progress.

This agreement would tackle big problems like illegal money movements and complicated tax situations that cross borders, making it easier for these countries to build stronger economies for the future.

As GFoundation reflects on the invaluable insights gained from our participation in the ECOSOC Special Meeting on International Cooperation in Tax Matters, GFoundation is more committed than ever to remaining actively engaged in these discussions.

GFoundation is committed to not only continuing our involvement in meetings but also to increasing awareness and understanding of these issues. We aim to share updates and insights to help the world talk about ways to let developing countries better use their own resources.

Our journey towards this goal is ongoing, and we look forward to sharing our progress and insights as we strive to make a meaningful difference in the international community.
