A Simple Idea That Meets Everyday Needs
At Queens Valley School of the Arts (PSMS 164Q) in Kew Gardens, Queens, an unused room is being transformed into something meaningful—a Care Closet designed to support students with everyday essentials.
For many students, access to items like clothing, hygiene products, and school supplies can make a significant difference in their daily lives. This initiative is helping ensure that those needs can be met within the school community.
How the Care Closet Began
The idea was developed by Mr. Thanasoulis, a middle school ESL teacher at PSMS 164Q.
After noticing that some students occasionally rely on outside support for basic necessities, he began exploring ways to create a resource within the school where students and their families could access essential items when needed.
With the help of student volunteers, shelves were organized to collect and distribute donated goods. Students are able to visit the Care Closet during school hours—with permission—and take items home as needed.
Supporting a Diverse School Community
PSMS 164Q serves approximately 800 students across its K–8 program, representing families from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds.
While the Care Closet currently supports students and their families, there are plans to expand the program to serve the surrounding community as the initiative grows.
Contributing to the Care Closet
After connecting with the school, Gfoundation visited PSMS 164Q to learn more about the program and support its development.
During this visit, Gfoundation provided hygiene items, including:
- 99 deodorants
- 42 bottles of Girl Scout shampoo and conditioner
- 16 bottles of conditioner
- 1 box of assorted sanitary pads
These items will be made available through the Care Closet to support students and their families.
Why This Matters
Programs like the Care Closet demonstrate how schools can serve as important centers of support within their communities.
When educators and nonprofit organizations work together, resources can reach students in practical and meaningful ways—helping reduce barriers that may affect their daily lives and learning.
Looking Ahead
Gfoundation is grateful to Mr. Thanasoulis, Principal Lafalaise, and the PSMS 164Q community for welcoming us and sharing their vision for this initiative.
We look forward to continuing to support programs that help students and families access essential resources—so students can focus on learning and growing.
