A rare and powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 struck Morocco late at night at 11:11 PM on September 8. The devastating earthquake left Morocco with more than 2,900 people dead and 5,530 injured (as of September 12). A 4.9 magnitude aftershock followed 19 minutes later; several more have been reported. Rescuers in Morocco are still searching for survivors.
The biggest quake to hit the country in a century

The worst destruction has been in isolated mountain areas, which are difficult to access. Residents have described whole villages suffering damage and rescuers unable to retrieve bodies from rubble.

In Marrakech, the nearest major city, many residents spent a second night sleeping on the streets, too afraid to return to their homes. Historic sites in the popular tourist destination have been damaged.
Morocco is in dire need now
Families may have been displaced by the earthquake and could be in urgent need of shelter, safe water, medical care, protection, and psychosocial support.
